July 1954
Vietnam Divided
In Geneva, the French and the Viet Minh sign accords ending the Indochina War and "temporarily" dividing the country along the 17th Parallel until elections can be held by 20 July 1956 to unify the country. Hanoi is to be the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in the North, and Saigon is to be the capital of the Republic of Vietnam south of the demilitarized zone. The "Final Declaration" stipulates that the 17th Parallel is not to be used as a political boundary. The United States declines to endorse the final declaration; Bao Dai’s government denounces the final agreements.
