U-2 Plane Shot Down in USSR
A U-2 plane is shot down inside Soviet territory while on a photographic reconnaissance mission, a fact at first denied by American officials. This incident chills any hint at détente between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, won’t be released from custody until February 1962.
