October 1962
Cuban Missile Crisis
In a major confrontation with the Soviets, President Kennedy announces the U.S. has photographic evidence that the Russians are building missile bases in Cuba and demands that all missiles be removed and the bases dismantled. To enforce the American position, the U.S. puts in place a naval blockade around Cuba. After six tense days, with the possibility of armed conflict with the Soviet Union hanging in the balance, Russian Premier Khrushchev accedes to U.S. demands.
