Support the Memorial

When the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial was built and dedicated in 1985, the expectation was that it would speak to future generations about the service and sacrifice of those who answered their country’s call during the years of the Vietnam War.

Without a major new effort, this is not to be.

Because of the harsh conditions at Vietnam Veterans Plaza in lower Manhattan, where the memorial is buffeted by winds gusting off the East River and because of inherent problems with some of the media used in the initial construction, this glass block-and-granite wall is expected to deteriorate markedly over the next decade.

A committee of concerned New York City veterans, technical experts and architects are looking into recreating the wall -- using different media that will stand the test of time.

To contribute or find out more about this effort please e-mail the United War Veterans Council (UWVC) or call them directly at 212.693.0446. Financial contributions are fully tax deductible.
